API documentation
Base URL https://metalapi.com/api/v1. All responses are JSON over HTTPS. Existing MetalAPI integrations keep working unchanged.
Quickstart
Create a free account, copy your API key from the dashboard and request the latest gold and silver prices:
curl "https://metalapi.com/api/v1/latest?api_key=YOUR_API_KEY&base=USD¤cies=XAU,XAG,EUR"Authentication
Every request needs your API key. Send it in one of three ways (the header forms keep keys out of logs):
# Header (recommended)
curl -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY" https://metalapi.com/api/v1/latest
curl -H "X-API-Key: YOUR_API_KEY" https://metalapi.com/api/v1/latest
# Query string
curl "https://metalapi.com/api/v1/latest?api_key=YOUR_API_KEY"Keys look like mk_live_… and are shown only once when created; we store a hash. You can create several keys, name them, rotate them and restrict them to your website's domains in the dashboard. Requests from browsers on other domains are rejected with error 107; server-to-server requests are always allowed.
Response format
Rates are returned in both directions. For base USD and symbol XAU:
rates.USDXAU— price of one troy ounce of gold in USD (e.g. 3997.89).rates.XAU— ounces of gold one USD buys (1 / 3997.89 = 0.00025013).
Every response includes success and a rate_limit block with your monthly quota. Errors set success: false and an error object with code, type and info. Timestamps are Unix seconds (UTC); dates are YYYY-MM-DD (UTC).
Latest rates
/api/v1/latestCurrent rates for every requested symbol. The data you receive is as fresh as your plan's update interval allows (daily on Free, down to 5 seconds on Enterprise).
Add XAU-BID / XAU-ASK (any metal or currency) to currencies for the book (Standard plan and above).
timestamp is the time of the data, not of the request.

}Realtime stream (SSE)
/api/v1/streamPro plan and aboveA Server-Sent Events stream that pushes prices events at your plan's update interval (5–60 s), with the same base, currencies and unit parameters as /latest. A comment heartbeat is sent every 15 seconds. Each connection costs one request when it opens and one request per minute while open.
const es = new EventSource(
"https://metalapi.com/api/v1/stream?api_key=YOUR_API_KEY¤cies=XAU,XAG,EUR"
);
es.addEventListener("prices", (e) => {
const { timestamp, rates } = JSON.parse(e.data);
console.log(timestamp, rates.USDXAU);
});
es.addEventListener("error", (e) => console.warn("stream error", e));event: prices
data: {"timestamp":1792834897,"base":"USD","rates":{"XAU":0.0002501,"USDXAU":3998.12,"XAG":0.01853,"USDXAG":53.97}}Units & bid/ask
Metal prices are per troy ounce unless you pass unit: gram, kilogram, ounce (avoirdupois), pound, metric_ton or short_ton. The unit applies to metals only — it is ignored for currencies, energy (barrel, MMBtu, gallon) and crypto. It also applies when a metal is the base.
On Standard plans and above, request the book by adding -BID / -ASK to a code, e.g. currencies=XAU,XAU-BID,XAU-ASK. The response then contains XAU-BID and USDXAU-BID alongside the mid price.
Quotas & rate limits
Each plan has a monthly request quota (reset on the 1st, 00:00 UTC) and a per-minute limit. Both are reported on every response:
X-RateLimit-Limit: 10000 # monthly quota
X-RateLimit-Remaining: 9875
X-RateLimit-Used: 125
X-RateLimit-Reset: 1793491200 # unix time of the next reset
X-RateLimit-Reset-Date: 2026-11-01T00:00:00.000Z
X-RateLimit-Plan: Standard
X-RateLimit-Minute-Limit: 60
X-RateLimit-Minute-Remaining: 58
Retry-After: 21 # only on 429 responses/symbolsand/usageare free.- Requests rejected because of rate limits, plan restrictions, domain restrictions or server errors are not billed.
- Validation errors (codes 2xx) count, so validate input before retrying in a loop.
Your plan also sets data freshness: Free sees the previous day's close, Lite 30-minute, Standard 10-minute, Advanced/Pro 60-second, Ultra/Business 15-second and Enterprise 5-second data. Compare plans.

Webhooks
Price alerts (dashboard → Alerts) can notify you by email or by an HTTPS webhook (Advanced plan and above). Each delivery is a POST with a JSON body, retried up to three times on failure. Verify the signature with the webhook secret shown in your dashboard:
import crypto from "node:crypto";
// Express example: use the raw request body.
app.post("/metalapi-webhook", express.raw({ type: "application/json" }), (req, res) => {
const header = req.get("X-MetalAPI-Signature") ?? ""; // "t=1792834892,v1=5f0c…"
const { t, v1 } = Object.fromEntries(header.split(",").map((p) => p.split("=")));
const expected = crypto
.createHmac("sha256", process.env.METALAPI_WEBHOOK_SECRET)
.update(`${t}.${req.body}`)
.digest("hex");
const fresh = Math.abs(Date.now() / 1000 - Number(t)) < 300;
if (!fresh || !crypto.timingSafeEqual(Buffer.from(v1, "hex"), Buffer.from(expected, "hex"))) {
return res.status(400).end();
}
const event = JSON.parse(req.body); // { event: "alert.triggered", alert: {...}, price: 4012.5 }
res.status(200).end();
});Widgets
Create a widget in the dashboard and paste the embed code into any page. Widgets update automatically and never expose your API key.

- Industrial metals and energy: COMEX, NYMEX and ICE front-month futures.
- Other currencies: market quotes, with European Central Bank reference rates as fallback.
- Crypto: Kraken and Binance, 24/7.
- Multiple sources are combined by median and checked for bad ticks before publication.
- Metals, FX and futures trade Sunday 17:00 to Friday 17:00 New York time. Over the weekend prices are frozen at Friday's close.
- Daily history before October 2026 for metals is based on front-month futures settlements.
